Adjusting to College Life

Interboro Institute specializes in preparing working adults with and without a high school degree for the transition from a job to a career. Convenient locations and class schedules allow you to continue working while attending school full-time. Dedicated professors and professional tutors work with you outside the classroom to help you grasp difficult subjects. State and Federal Financial Aid is available to those who qualify.

To enroll in Interboro you must exhibit the academic ability to succeed in college level courses.  For those with a high school diploma or GED, a placement test will help us align your courses with your current skill level.

Applicants who wish to enroll without a high school diploma or GED, may do so once they meet an entrance level score on our CPAt exam.  No fear, the exam is just an assessment of your existing academic skills and does not measure your ability to learn.  Applicants who score lower on the exam are eligible to enroll in a two week course that is designed to improve your language, reading and math skills. The SMART START I Program is offered free of charge and is a college level course that is taught by qualified instructors in classroom setting. The goals of this Program are to: 1) improve your academic knowledge in math, reading and writing and 2) to test your commitment to learning in a college environment. Once completed, you may retake the CPAT exam.

Before your first day of classes, all freshmen are offered two additional pre-college programs to get you acclimated to college, making it much easier to adjust to your first semester of college.

The SMART START II Program is an intensive, two-week course designed to prepare students for success in college-level writing and reading, with emphasis on vocabulary, reading comprehension, inferences, essay structure, critical thinking, and the fundamentals of grammar.

The LEAP Program is a three-hour class is mandatory for all students who have gained admission to the College. First semester students learn the critical thinking, time management and study skills necessary to succeed. Students also receive a review of basic math and English and learn library research techniques.
All incoming students at Interboro are assigned a full-time faculty member to act as their mentor.  Mentors act as a resource for students by directing students who have a questions or problems to the appropriate area within the college.  Your Academic Advisors may also be approached to help you with issues that might be interfering with your studies.  Your Mentor and Academic Advisor are there to provide you with the guidance and information you need to succeed and persist.

As an upper classmen, work-study programs and internships provide real-life experience needed to enter a professional work environment. Interboro Institute offers life-time placement services for those who complete Interboro's fully accredited 2-year Associate's degree program
