Exams and Exemptions
Course Placement
Incoming students are required to take placement examinations in English and mathematics. However, students who have completed a Bachelor’s degree or higher at an accredited institution are exempted from taking the placement tests. Test results determine whether a student is placed in credit or non-credit (developmental) courses.
Advanced Standing Exemption
Applicants who have the qualifications or who demonstrate proficiency for a required course may apply for admission with advanced standing. When an exemption is granted, other courses may need to be substituted for the course (s) in which the student has received advanced standing. The student should consult an academic advisor for more information.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Interboro awards college credit to any student who scores at the recommended levels of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). The Commission on Educational Credit of the American Council on Education, the parent organization of CLEP, sets the standards for the exams. Further information about the program and its applicability may be obtained from the Office of Academic Affairs.
College Proficiency Examination Program (CPEP)
The College Proficiency Examination Program (CPEP) of the New York State Education Department provides a means for testing college level competencies. Credit at Interboro will be awarded for CPEP grades of “C” or better in courses comparable to those listed in this catalog and judged acceptable by the appropriate academic department. Information about the CPEP may be obtained by writing to the program at: New York State Education Department College Proficiency Examination Program 1450 Western Avenue Albany, NY 12203
